Photos have emerged online showing 92-year-old former President of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, being helped by his aides as he boarded a plane at Sokoto airport. 

 

The influential politician and elder statesman has been rarely seen in public lately due to his ill health which is mainly attributed to his age.

 

Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, Turakin Sakkwato served as the first and only President of Nigeria's Second Republic, after the handover of power by General Olusegun Obasanjo's military government.

 

Presidential term: 1 October 1979 – 31 December 1983
