Police corporal and pastor arrested for armed robbery, confesses to supplying arms to robbery gangs

A police corporal who was recently arrested for armed robbery, confessed to having supplied arms and ammunition to robbery gangs in various states, including Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa states.

Christ Oboko Onitsha Ugbo, was arrested after he allegedly led his gang on a series of robbery operations in some states in the Niger Delta region. He is currently being detained by the Inspector General of Police’s Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT)

According to Daily Trust, the 36-year-old, until his arrest was attached to a special squad code named C4I of the Rivers State Police Command and was also the resident pastor of a church at Choba, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Oboko, who has also been linked to several violent crimes in Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, Lagos and Edo state was said to have been deployed to C41 from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Rivers State Command, having distinguished himself as a sniper and crack detective.

Prior to his arrest, the office of the immediate past IGP, Solomon Arase received series of complaints about the notorious activities of the gang and subsequently directed the leader of the Special Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, to investigate the matter. Oboko was arrested following the arrest and confessions of one of his gang member identified as one Johnpaul Amandi.

"Aside from supplying members of my gang with police rifles and bullets, I also help keep their guns in my house without the knowledge of my wife and children."Oboko confessed.

"I joined the Nigeria Police Force in April 2003. I served at Borokiri Police Division, from there I went to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad SARS before joining  C4I. I started car snatching in 2015 when I met Amandi, he was our informant. He lured me into robbery. I was only supplying them with arms. It all started when Amandi brought two vehicles. He gave them to one Victor Nwogu to sell. I met them doing the negotiation and from there, I offered to join them.

"I robbed the driver of a Toyota Camry at D-line area of Port Harcourt  and we  took the car to Victor in Owerri, I sold the car to victor for N200,000.  We were three and  I took N70,000 and I gave Amandi and Kelvin the balance to share. On the second operation, the three of us went for the job at  D-line and we stole three Camry cars from the park. We sold the vehicles to the same Victor in Owerri and he paid us N360,000. I got N150,000 as my share.

"We also snatched a Toyota Corolla, from Elelanwan area at gunpoint from its owner and I took the car to Victor and he paid N250,000. I took N80,000 as my share and I gave the rest to Amandi and Kelvin to share.

"We also snatched a Toyota Spider car at GRA from the owner at gun point and we parked it inside Borokiri sand field.  But before we arrived in the morning the car had been removed,"

Lamenting, Oboko said, "I was always going to release them whenever they were arrested by the police and I don’t know what came over me.  I am the resident pastor of a church at Choba, in Port Harcourt. I don’t know what made me join Amandi in his evil business."

The out going Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Bisi Kolawole, who paraded the suspect disclosed that he and members of his gang were terrorizing Port Harcourt.

The gang members enjoyed full protection from Oboko, who bailed and defended them whenever they were arrested by the police. He provided fake vehicle documents for stolen vehicles and altered the vehicle engine and chassis numbers selling them, Ms Kolawole added.

Italy, Colombia, U.S. seize 11 tonnes of cocaine, arrest 33 people

Italian, Colombian and U.S. police have seized 11 tonnes of cocaine and arrested 33 people from a mafia-linked ring which refined the drug in the jungles of Colombia and smuggled it out in containers of tropical fruits.

Most of the cocaine was seized in Colombia, Franco Roberti, head of Italy's national anti-mafia department, said at a news conference with Colombian and U.S. drug agents.
The ring refined the cocaine in Colombia, where seven laboratories were found in the jungle, and shipped it to Europe and the United States in containers holding tropical fruit via countries including Panama, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.
Of the 33 arrests, which officials said were made on Thursday and in the past few days, 22 were carried out in Colombia and the rest in Italy.
The Italian end of the operation was run by the 'Ndrangheta, the organized crime group based in the southern region of Calabria.
The operation was carried out jointly by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), including its agents in Italy and Colombia, Italian police and Colombian police, Roberti and other officials told a news conference in Rome.
"This is the way we have to fight this war, together," said James Allen, the DEA's regional director for Europe. "They are drug traffickers, they are killers," he told the news conference.

Ex-London mayor halts bid to be UK prime minister, upends race

Former London mayor Boris Johnson abruptly pulled out of the race to become Britain's prime minister that he was once favored to win, upending the contest less than a week after he led a campaign to take the country out of the EU.

Johnson's announcement, to audible gasps from a roomful of journalists and supporters on Thursday, was the biggest political surprise since Prime Minister David Cameron quit after losing last week's referendum on British membership of the bloc.
It makes interior minister Theresa May, a party stalwart who backed remaining in the European Union, the new favorite to succeed Cameron.
May, seen as a steady hand, announced her own candidacy earlier on Thursday, promising to deliver the withdrawal from the EU voters had demanded despite having campaigned for the other side.
"Brexit means Brexit," she told a news conference. "The campaign was fought, the vote was held, turnout was high and the public gave their verdict. There must be no attempts to remain inside the EU, no attempts to rejoin it through the back door and no second referendum."
The decision to quit the EU has cost Britain its top credit rating, pushed the pound to its lowest level against the dollar since the mid-1980s and wiped a record $3 trillion off global shares. EU leaders are scrambling to prevent further unraveling of a bloc that helped guarantee peace in post-war Europe.
The International Monetary Fund indicated that uncertainty over Brexit would hurt economic growth in Britain, the rest of Europe and the wider world. The governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, said monetary policy would probably be eased over the summer.
'PUNCHLINE'
Johnson, whose backing for the Leave cause was seen as essential to its victory, saw his leadership bid suddenly crumble after his Brexit campaign ally, Justice Secretary Michael Gove, withdrew support and announced a bid of his own.
"I must tell you, my friends, you who have waited faithfully for the punchline of this speech, that having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances in parliament, I have concluded that person cannot be me," Johnson said at the close of his speech at a London luxury hotel.

Supporters, gathered for what they thought would be the first speech of his leadership campaign, were stunned. Johnson began by hailing a "moment for hope and ambition for Britain, a time not to fight against the tide of history but to take that tide at the flood and sail on to fortune".

Abia governorship: Ikpeazu insists he is still governor, faults INEC's issuance of Certificate of return to Uche Ogah

Earlier today, INEC issued a certificate of return to a member of PDP, Uche Ogah, following an order by the Abuja Federal High Court on Monday June 27th, mandating the electoral body to immediately issue Certificate of Return to Ogah who came second at the PDP primaries in the state in 2014. The state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has released a statement reacting to the development, According to him, he remains the Governor of the state since he has filed an appeal against the ruling.

Read his statement below

I have received with concern, report of the purported issuance of Certificate of Return to Mr. Uche Ogah by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as governor of Abia State, despite dependency of a notice of appeal and motion for stay of the orders made by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Our laws are clear on this matter. No one may be issued with a certificate of return let alone be sworn in as governor, when there is a subsisting appeal and application for stay.

I want to appeal to Abians to remain calm and law abiding in the face of this provocation, unless and until the appellant courts have conclusively resolve the appeal, the status remains, I am still the Governor of Abia State.

Dr Okezie Ikpeazu
Governor, Abia State

Abia Governorship : INEC issues certificate of return to Uche Ogah

INEC this afternoon issued a certificate of return to PDP member, Uche Ogah (left), following an order by the Abuja Federal High Court on Monday June 27th, mandating INEC to immediately issue Certificate of Return to Ogah who came second at the PDP primaries in the state in 2014.

Ogah had dragged the former state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, before the court, arguing that he presented false tax clearance during the party primaries.  The presiding judge, Justice Okon Abang, said that on the account of fake tax returns during the primaries, Ikpeazu was never qualified to run in the PDP primaries as a governorship candidate. He nullified Ikpeazu's election and ordered INEC to issue a certificate of return to Ogah.

Ikpeazu has since filed an appeal against the ruling.

Former PDP Publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh, offers to refund N400m traced to him

Embattled former Publicity Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh, has offered to refund the N400 million from the arms deal procurement fund that was traced to him. In a statement released by his lawyer, Onyechi Ikpazu, Metuh said he was returning the money to signify his support for President Muhammadu Buhari's anti-corruption war. Metuh is currently undergoing trial for money laundering at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Full text of his statement offering to refund the money below

Why Our Client (Chief Olisa Metuh) is Offering To Refund The N400 million – Counsel
In the light of the circumstances regarding the case of our client, Chief Olisa Metuh with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), we want to explain the reasons for our client's proposal to refund the N400 million released to him by former President Goodluck Jonathan, and which was expended on a project approved by the ex-President on national issues relating to his Presidency and the Federal Government at that time.
1. We want to restate that at the time the money was released to him after his presentation to the ex-President, our client had no knowledge of the source, a fact that is now obvious from the evidence of the prosecution and defence witnesses. Our client had every cause to believe that the money was from the ex-President to whom he made a presentation, received directives and rendered report and accounts accordingly.
2. When the matter first came up, and Chief Metuh was invited to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in December 2015, he requested to know the source of the money and expressed his readiness to make refunds if it was from government coffers, not minding that the money had been expended as directed by the former President. Officials at ONSA never got back to him as they promised, until his arrest by the EFCC in January 2016.
3. It was however while in court that a document was brought regarding the source of the money and since then, our Client has made manifest his willingness to refund the money and has indeed approached his family, friends and associates to mobilise funds to refund the entire N400 million to the government regardless of the fact that the money had been expended based on the directives of the former President and that part of the money had been recovered from one of the prosecution witnesses.
4. We want to confirm that since then, we have been in talks with the Ministry of Justice, the EFCC and other necessary bodies on how to refund the money and resolve the issue.
5. Our client occupied no government office. His commitment and dedication to his official duties have been confirmed by even prosecution witnesses. In this whole saga, he has been an unfortunate victim of circumstances. His refunding the money, therefore, goes to show his support for the anti-corruption war as well as serve as a testament to his sincerity, integrity and honesty in this matter.
6. There is no doubt that the prosecution has considerably embarked on some expenses in the course of this case. It is hoped that by not discounting the sum already recovered, whatever cost so far incurred would have been defrayed. By this, a critical objective of recovery of funds would no doubt be achieved.
7. It is pertinent to restate our client's continued support for the anti-corruption campaign, which is necessary to ensure probity in the affairs of Nigeria to the extent that it is conducted within the rule of law.
8. Finally, it is our client's prayer that this nation shall come through this difficult time by the grace of the Almighty God.

Signed:
Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN)
Counsel To Chief Olisa Metuh

Istanbul Airport suspected ISIS bombers were Uzbek, Russian, Kyrgyz - Turkish official

Three suspected Islamic State (ISIS) suicide bombers who killed 43 people in a gun and bomb attack at Istanbul's main airport this week were Russian, Uzbek and Kyrgyz nationals, a Turkish government official said on Thursday June 30.

The suicide bombers opened fire to create panic outside, before two of them got inside the terminal building and blew themselves up. The third detonated his explosives at the entrance. At least 239 people were wounded in the attack.

According to Reuters, the Turkey official who confirmed the terrorists' nationalities, declined to be named because details of the investigation have not yet been released. Forensics teams had been struggling to identify the bombers from their limited remains, officials said earlier.
"A medical team is working around the clock to conclude the identification process," one of the officials said.
Interior Minister Efkan Ala told parliament that evidence continued to point to ISIS responsibility and that the death toll had risen to 43, of whom 19 were foreigners. Ala said the identity and nationality of one of the bombers had been determined but did not comment further.

The pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper said the Russian bomber was from Dagestan, which borders Chechnya. Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper named him as Osman Vadinov and said he had come from Raqqa, the heart of Islamic State-controlled territory in Syria.

The Russian interior ministry said it was checking information about Vadinov. A spokesman for Kyrgyzstan's state security service said it was investigating, while the Uzbek security service had no immediate comment.

Man sentenced to 7 years imprisonment over Visa scam

The EFCC today secured the conviction of Idris Buhari pictured above, a resident of durimin iya quarters kano, who was arraigned before Justice J K Omotosho of Federal High Court 3 Kano, on one count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence.

Idris was arrested by EFCC operatives following a complaint brought against him by Abdullahi Salisu Muhammad of popular kwari market, Kano, alleging that he gave the convict, who is a school teacher the sum of #500,000.00 for the processing of Hajj ticket in April, 2012. He said the convict  told him that he is a registered travelling agent, but to his greatest surprise, was unable to provide the said Hajj ticket and diverted the funds to his personal use. All effort to recover the money from him or get the ticket as agreed proved abortive, as the convict claimed that the monies were lost to armed robbers.

In the Judgement, Justice Omotosho convicted and sentenced the convict to seven years imprisonment. He however gave an option of #200,000.00 as fine, being that he restituted the victim the sum of #500,000.00 which is the amount involved

13-year-old girl Jewish girl stabbed to death in her bedroom by a Palestinian terrorist

A Palestinian terrorist infiltrated the Judean community of Kiryat Arba, located outside of Hebron and fatally stabbed a 13-year-old girl in her bedroom with a knife, today, June 30.

He entered a home nearby the fence, found the teenage girl sleeping in her bed and stabbed her repeatedly in the upper body before Kiryat Arba’s

Israeli guards shot the attacker dead but not before he managed to stab one civilian security officer in the face. A Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedic who arrived on the scene found the teenage girl, identified as eighth-grader Hallel Yaffe Ariel, unconscious and without a pulse. She was loaded into an ambulance but quickly succumbed to her wounds.

The wounded civilian guard, 30, was reported to be conscious and his injuries non-life threatening. He was evacuated to Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center. His wife, a paramedic, was part of the responding MDA team.

Sports minister Dalung rules out NFF's decision to appoint a foreign coach for Super Eagles

Nigeria's Minister of Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung has ruled out the NFF's decision to appoint a foreign coach for the Super Eagles to help qualify the country's senior national team to Russia 2018 World Cup, because the football body cannot even pay it's home grown coaches.

The NFF had drawn up a list of foreign coaches to handle the Super Eagles but the sports minister has questioned the rationale behind this, describing it “a fundamental contradiction not easy to swallow”.
The minister however said that using local coaches was worthwhile if they could rise above parochial politics.
“The selection of coach usually is handled by our technical team. We are a supervising ministry.' Dalung said, according to BusinessDay.
''We have little to do with the process but we have a role in guiding what is best for Nigeria. I have always maintained that if we cannot pay indigenous coaches, we still owe them some months of salaries, some of them have even died without those salaries.
“Do we still go and look for foreign coach and will he be able to tolerate us without salaries for some time more also that we may also be paying him in hard currency? So, it is a fundamental contradiction to swallow easily but there is one aspect of this indigenous coaching that has been responsible for the poor performance of football in Nigeria which Nigerians need to know.
“They have not been able to grow above their parochial sentiment. An example is that a coach will train a team, the team will qualify to go to the next stage, once it becomes international they will now submit a different list of people not the entire new people who qualified. This already has violated what is referred to as team spirit in football. A team that played is different from the one that is going. We have that crisis on our hands now, especially with the list of those who are going to Rio.
“Those who qualified are fundamentally different from those that have been sent to go and play at the finals. So, some people are only good to go and qualify and create room for others to go. That is one of the problems with indigenous coaching,”Dalung said.
Previous coaches of the Super Eagles, Sunday Oliseh, the late Shuaibu Amodu and Stephen Keshi complained of being owed salaries at one point or the other during their tenure.

Journalist who alleged that the Kaduna State Govt abandoned the boy whose 'eyes were plucked out by ritualists' shares more details

Journalist Femi Owolabi revealed yesterday that the Kaduna State government hasn't fulfilled its promise to sponsor the boy's education and have allegedly abandoned him. Read here . Femi has now shared a more revealing update. Read below
At a moment yesterday, as a father you know, I broke down, when with Abubakar. When I lifted him into my arms, he started using his palms to rub my index finger and was saying, "Ina kwana? Ina kwana? Ina kwana? (how was your night/sleep?) He wouldn't stop until I answered. I was looking into his face. Handsome. And smart. This little boy.
"It was on a Sunday morning," Abu's father recounted. He and his brother usually go for Quranic class, but Abu won't go until he collects money to buy what he will take along to class. His grandma gave him money and he went to the third house to this place, where he usually buy cheese ball. Cheese ball had finished and he was returning when some people called him. I wasn't around, it was his grandma who was at home. After a while that she didn't see him return, she went outside to look for him, and there, she saw a circle of people gathered, round his son. His two eyes have been removed. Everything happened in just 30minutes."
The Kaduna State Police PRO is yet to pick my calls. I'm not sure if this is still being investigated, because no suspect has been identified by the police. The parents told me they've given up on the police, a long time.
I gathered that the Emir of Zaria attempted to assist Abu by taking him to a specialist hospital in Kaduna for a possible eye transplant. Unfortunately, the hospital said it's beyond what they can handle. Again, it is a shame on the Kaduna State government who has failed to redeem its pledges. What will it cost Governor Nasir el-Rufai to fly Abu to India or Germany for further treatment, which he really needs? And sadly, because he wasn't sure if our mission was a genuine one, the Director of the school we intend to put Abubakar in Zaria told me yesterday that, "that was how the Local Government Chairman went to the media to say that they (the government) have already put the boy in our school whereas, there's nothing like that."
Politicians and their wicked ways. At first, I didn't wanna get myself bothered about this because the report was that a delegation from the Kaduna State government had visited him-- with pledges-- in the hospital. It was all propaganda, we now know. What the government gave Abu was less that N200, 000. And since that hospital visit, no one from the government office has come to check on Abu in that rickety corner in Zaria.
On a lighter note; I visited Abu with beverages and some stuffs. As I dropped the items on the floor, Abu would pick and hand it over to his grandma. He picked the cornflakes pack, gave to his grandma. Picked the milo and milk sachets, gave to his grandma. When his hand touched the carton of Bobo, he didn't make any attempt to give this one to his grandma. He started dragging it with his brother, and was shouting; "Ina so in sha Bobo! Ina so in sha Bobo!! (I want to drink Bobo!).

Gay men attacked in Cote d’Ivoire for sympathizing with Orlando victims

Six gay men were attacked in Cote d’Ivoire and forced to flee their homes after they were pictured signing a condolence book for the victims of the recent attack at a gay night club in Orlando, Florida early this month. The U.S. embassy in the country had hosted an event a fortnight ago to honor the Florida victims and published a photo of the six men on its website with the caption: ‘LGBT community signing the condolence book’.
Days after the tribute, one of the men in the photo was attacked by a mob in his neighbourhood. Another man in the picture was also attacked after the photo was circulated on Facebook and other websites. The others were verbally abused. All six of them have fled their homes for fear of further attack on them.
