The police have arrested a 32-year-old notorious gun runner, Fobi Kingsley Mbaku, for allegedly conveying firearms and bullets from Nigeria to Cameroon.

He was paraded by the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Aminu Alhassan, alongside 29 other suspects at the command headquarters on Diamond Hill, Calabar, the state capital, on Friday.

The commissioner said the suspected gun runner was arrested along Ranch Road, Obanliku Local Government Area of the state.

The police boss said there is a hideout for locally fabricated automatic rifles, and that the suspect is a syndicate of the illegal business of gun-running which operates within Obanliku and its environs.

Two hundred rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition were allegedly recovered from the suspect.

“Effort is ongoing to arrest other fleeing syndicate members and to unravel the source and mission of this illegitimate venture. The suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed”, the commissioner said.

The suspect confessed that his friend whose name was not immediately disclosed usually asked him to help convey bags of the ammunition to cross the Nigerian border into Cameroon.

“I have been doing this for over six months. But I must say that I really did not know the contents of the bags I usually carry across the border.

“I am usually paid N10,000 each time I conveyed the goods,”
he said.
