Boko Haram attacks Borno community, destroy INEC office, others

Residents of Gubio, a town in Borno state, have fled their homes following an attack from Boko Haram members. According to reports, the insurgents stormed the village on the evening of Wednesday August 21st at about 5pm and started shooting sporadically and  setting many houses on fire.

A soldier from the army’s 5 brigade stationed in Damasak who confirmed the attack, said the town has been without any soldier in the last three month. He revealed that the sect members burnt the INEC office and some houses during yesterday's attack.

“There is no soldier in Gubio, and that is why those guys moved in. They burnt the INEC office and some other houses. As I am speaking, troops have been reinforced from the brigade and now in face-off with the insurgents.” the soldier said

Jack Vince, a journalist resident in Maiduguri, said the sect members operated without any resistance because there was no soldier in the area.

“For about two weeks now no military post from Damasak on the border with Niger Republic to my community in Maiduguri, Magumeri, Kareto, Gubio and so on. Gubio was dislodged, soldiers ran to Damasak and Maiduguri leaving that wide expanse of land unguarded.”

The Nigerian Army is yet to comment on the recent attack.
