NANS Cautions Oyo SARS Over Alleged Detention Of Ajimobi’s Former Aide

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, yesterday cautioned the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, unit of the Oyo State Police command over what it described as the alleged high-handed of some of its officers, urging them to be professional in the discharge of their duties.

In a statement signed by its National president, Gambu Abu Mohammed, and available to newsmen, the student body made reference to the alleged detention of one of its stakeholders and former governor’s aide in the state, Godwin Obode, who it said was unlawfully detained incommunicado for days but was released after public outrage.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Shina Olukolu had said that the Police acted on a petition, which claimed that the suspect was given N18.5 million for an assignment but fled with the money. Olukolu added that attempts by the petitioner to retrieve the money after his alleged failure to carry out the assignment proved abortive.
But NANS in its reaction accused the police of attempting to cow his comrade by hurriedly charging Obode to court on trump up charges.
According to NANS “After the unsuccessful attempts to force Obode to play their game, the Police have been making frantic efforts to charge Obode to court on trump up charges. We urged the Police to purge itself of the bad eggs and hypocrites trying to malign its image because of what they stand to benefit.”
“Over 40 million Nigerian students and youths are very much alert and taking keen interest of the evil plot of those involved. We promised not to only resist any intimidation but we would also respond appropriately in due course,” it stated.
