Japanese Construction Boss In Shootout With Police After Killing An Employee

A Japanese construction boss accused of murdering a co-worker has shot himself in the abdomen ending a 17-hour standoff with police. Yasuhide Mizobata fled into an apartment building in Wakayama, western Japan on Tuesday afternoon after firing repeatedly at officers.

Mizobata is suspected of shooting dead his co-worker Junsuke Ishiyama on Monday and wounding three others, in what is thought to be the first gun murder in Japan of 2016.

The suspect was rushed from the scene in an ambulance. His condition is not yet known.

Public broadcaster NHK showed the final few moments of the siege as heavily-armed officers stormed the apartment complex.

After Monday's shooting, police approached Mizobata, who was armed with two pistols. He opened fire at the police, blasting out the windows of a squad car before fleeing.

Eventually, police tracked Mizobata down to an apartment where he was surrounded for 17-hours before turning the gun on himself.

A massive manhunt began on Monday after Mizobata allegedly killed 45-year-old Junsuke Ishiyama and wounded three others when he opened fire during a meeting at the offices of a construction company. Mizobata is reportedly the son of the company owner.
